Point Reyes

Beautiful drive today up to Point Reyes, to drop off two little fire paintings for the annual juried exhibition at Gallery Route One.  Rene de Guzman, Senior Curator for the Oakland Museum, was the juror and "My Parents' Garden" got an award of merit.  Do visit if you're up that way.

"Natasha," acrylic on paper 10 x 8 in.

I have a few paintings in City Art's backroom gallery "Affordable Art" this month: small works and some real steals. The show will continue through January, so if you can give gift certificates for art for the holidays! See their website for the extended hours:

Also I will be doing another demonstration at Flax Art on Saturday, December 11 from 2 - 5pm with more opportunity to purchase paintings.

Live demonstration

Flax Art on Market Street in San Francisco is celebrating 72 years with Flax Fest, free demonstrations and seminars in the store through the end of October.
I will be painting live at Flax this Friday. I'll show how I work in oils on canvas paper, using photographs as a source. Canvas pad is like a pad of paper, but each sheet is primed canvas. I use stretched canvases all the time, but I like canvas paper because you can easily cut it down to the composition you like at any time. Also, stretched canvas has texture and some give, but canvas paper is smoother, and you're working on a rigid surface which makes the technique of "erasing" the paint easier.
There are some paintings done with these materials, which I matt and frame, in my Feb. 09 blog:

five of my items got <3s,
and I had my first quote on Twitter "http://twitter.com/SFCITYART"
(I said small paintings of cute camper vans but I guess it didn't fit).
I never thought I would sink so low!

Meanwhile, back in the real world, I have some paintings up at City Art Gallery this month, at 828 Valencia (between 19th & 20th Street) in San Francisco.
City Art is open Wed. - Sun. noon - nine and the show runs through the last Saturday of September, the 25th, coming down on the afternoon of the 26th.
As Twitter says, I am showing small paintings of cute camper vans and large paintings of cool musicians.

I am getting ready for Fall Open Studios, at Workspace Limited at 2150 Folsom Street (between 17th and 18th) San Francisco. That will be Saturday and Sunday October 9 - 10 from 11am - 6pm with a preview event Friday October 8 from 7 - 10pm.
The gallery downstairs will be curated by Nathan Larramendy, associate director of the Catharine Clark Gallery.
Send your postal address if you'd like to be on my mailing list. And don't miss the SF Open Studios Exhibition at SomArts Gallery, 934 Brannan St. (between 8th & 9th). It will be open to the public October 6 through 24. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Friday noon - 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am - 5pm.
Each participating Open Studios artist has one piece in this show, so you can go through the hundreds of works of art with your guide and mark the studios you would like to visit.
